Qld: Rail contracts to help maintain Qld trains stay on track

BRISBANE, Aug 31 AAP - Queensland's rail services received a boost today after the
state government signed two contracts worth more than $1.6 billion.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Steve Bredhauer said a $1.5 billion infrastructure
contract, known as the Below Rail agreement, would fund the maintenance of narrow gauge
rail tracks and capital projects in Queensland.

The agreement also included provision for timber bridges, the replacement of open level
crossings and noise barriers in urban areas.

Another $124 million Traveltrain contract will provide funding over the next two years
for passenger services.

Mr Bredhauer said a 15 per cent increase in patronage over the last two years demonstrated
the benefits of long distance rail transport.

Electric tilt trains between Brisbane and Rockhampton had proved tremendously popular
and cut the travelling time for the trip by two hours and 25 minutes, he said.
