Fed: Howard opposes fee for Gallipoli admission

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says he'll oppose a plan to charge an admission fee for
visitors to the Gallipoli battlefields.

There's been conflicting reports about Turkish plans for an admission fee to the Gelibolu
Historic National Park which includes sites such as Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay.

Mr HOWARD's told Melbourne's Radio 3AW the Turkish government hasn't consulted Australia
about the plan and he's making inquiries through Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER.

He says the territory obviously belongs to Turkey but it is also a special place for Australians.

Mr HOWARD says he's also unaware of plans for a sound and light show at the historic site.

A spokeswoman for Veterans Affairs Minister DANNA VALE says the reports are unfounded.
